JOB TITLE: Information Services Intern REPORTS TO: Mentor & Head of Information Services The Novi Public Library is seeking internship candidates in the first or second semester of a graduate level library science degree from an ALA accredited academic institution, who are interested in working in a public library. Length of the internship will vary, based on the candidate's availability, from a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years. Student Librarian interns will be assigned a Librarian mentor in the Information Services Department. The mentor will provide guidance for the intern and ensure that the intern is exposed to a variety of assignments and experiences, comprising a well-rounded public librarian internship. The Novi Public Library is a vibrant, fast-paced class six library located within Oakland County. The Library was awarded the "Community Builder Award" in 2021 from the Novi Chamber of Commerce for its innovative approach to reaching its community by introducing the first self-service kiosk in Michigan, called Lakeshore Lending Library. Join our team! PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Learn to provide readers' advisory, reference services and computer assistance using a variety of collections, materials and formats. Learn to participate in collection development and maintenance as needed, keeping within monetary and physical space constraints. Learn to plan, implement and promote programming services appropriate to the needs of the community. Learn to engage in outreach opportunities within the community. Develop proficiency with Library databases and digital services, and learn new technology and software. OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Works positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish department goals. Adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands, and resolve problem situations in a positive manner. Communicate effectively with patrons, co-workers, and professional colleagues. Seek professional continuing education, both organized and casual, with an air toward keeping services current and appropriate. Enforce library policies relevant to public use; responds to emergencies and provides support, as needed; acts quickly, exercising good judgment. Perform other duties as assigned. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled in a Master's Degree in Library/ Information Science from an ALA accredited program. Program start date of Fall 2022 or Winter 2023. Knowledge of adult and youth literature. Dedication to public service. Enthusiastic, friendly, self-motivated and creative. Strong obligation to confidentiality. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Knowledge of Internet and computer related technology. Excellent oral and written communications skills. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Physical mobility, vision, hearing, and manual dexterity essential. Maintain physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, bending, and /or walking for extended periods of time; stooping; crouching; reaching; carrying books or boxes of books; pushing book carts; seeing; keyboarding; using the telephone; lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull with wheeled cart up to 500 pounds; operating assigned equipment; picking up litter; spreading ice melt. Evening and weekend hours are required. Hours: 15 hours per week. This is a year-round, part-time position. Consideration will be given to academic workload and class schedules when arranging internship schedule. Preferred schedule: Mondays, 4-9pm Wednesdays, 9:30am-2:30pm Alternating Fridays and Saturdays, 1-6pm Salary: $16.00 per hour Benefits: Benefits are not offered with this position.
