Beverly Perry Fellow - District of Columbia Government

Location:
Washington, DC
Description:

BEVERLY PERRY FELLOWSHIP OPEN: August 9, 2023 CLOSE: Open until filled SALARY RANGE/GRADE: $82,000 HIRING PREFERENCE : This fellowship is limited to Georgetown Law School 3L students, graduating in 2024 only. The Executive Office of the Mayor, Office of General Counsel and Georgetown partner fellowship will offer a recent Georgetown Law graduate the opportunity to work for one year with Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Office of General Counsel. The fellowship is open to Georgetown JD students graduating in 2024. Qualifications: The fellowship is open to Georgetown JD students graduating in 2024. Candidates should have a strong interest in local government, excellent research and writing skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must live in the District of Columbia. The Office of General Counsel (“OGC”) is a small office that serves as counsel to the Mayor, as well as over 20 agencies and offices reporting to the Mayor, and to the Deputy Mayors as necessary or requested. The work of the office is varied and fast paced. The work ranges from legislative and regulatory review and occasional drafting, to drafting and review of other legal documents such as proposed settlements, interagency Memoranda of Understanding, Mayor’s Orders, and Mayor’s Memoranda. The OGC also works on Open Government issues, including the processing of FOIA requests submitted to the Executive Office of the Mayor. Situated within the Executive Office of the Mayor, OGC is involved, at least tangentially, in much of what goes on in District government. With an administration as dynamic as Mayor Bowser’s, every day is exciting. OGC interacts and collaborates with other agencies daily, so the fellow will have the opportunity to learn about the important work that agencies across the district are doing – not just that of the Executive Office of the Mayor. A fellowship with OGC will offer a unique chance to work in a government that WORKS! Fellow Duties: The fellow will have the chance to work on a range of projects and subject areas. It is anticipated that over the course of the Fellowship, the fellow will have opportunities to develop legal skills relating to ethics and open government, legislation and regulations, governmental appointments to boards and commissions, anti-discrimination law, and personnel matters. Significant time will be devoted to assisting the team’s FOIA officer and processing FOIA requests, applying applicable legal exemptions, communicating with requestors, and closing out requests. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Reviewing legal documents such as contracts, Mayor’s Orders, and Mayor’s Memoranda and providing recommendations to the General Counsel Conducting legal research on a wide range of topics that relate to legislation and other issues relevant to the Executive Office of the Mayor Reviewing and drafting responses to reports conducted by the Office of the D.C. Auditor Reviewing appointments to boards and commissions and Executive Service for legal sufficiency Answering routine questions of ethics law for clients in EOM and making referrals to the Board of Ethics and Government Accountability where appropriate Reviewing reports from various agencies for legal issues, consistency with administration policy and other questions of judgment. Application Deadline: Interviews will be conducted in the fall and a decision made as soon as possible. Powered by JazzHR
