Some travel, likely 3-5 trips per year, is expected.The ideal candidate will have a broad experience in a Quality Assurance program and a working underwriting knowledge by line of business. The candidate will possess the skills to execute an underwriting quality assurance program at a risk-based level and ensure that underwriting best practices are deployed and implemented to improve financial performance. The candidate will have strong team-building experience, be collaborative and influential, and be able to show experience successfully driving and executing upon key initiatives.Commercial underwriting expertise in complex lines is required, including Excess & Surplus or Specialty insurance. Formal people leadership experience is also preferred, through not required. We'll count on you to drive profitable underwriting results through leadership, development and engagement and proactively identifies issues, ideas and make recommendations to profitably grow the business. Job Description Key Responsibilities: Establishes research objectives and practice standards for the department. Ensures methodologies and outcomes meet business and strategic objectives. Directs analysis of trends found in the risk quality process including regional, line, national and automated underwriting systems results. Leads identification of organizational needs that require analysis and directs department in completion. Works closely with regional and staff leaders to analyze and implement changes to existing underwriting policies and procedures and leads the design, development and adherence to quality assurance standard methodologies. Sets expectations and standards of practice for analysis. Ensures compliance to legal requirements and organizational, business and strategic objectives. Determines project priorities and workflow standards for the department. Monitors and manages performance measurements to ensure effectiveness of the department's service delivery process. Effectively aligns organizational structure to drive business needs. Directs quality standards and practice for department. Provides recommendations to leadership regarding underwriting strategy and opportunity. Measures and manages underwriting processing and quality. Actively participates in underwriting management process and influences regional and staff decisions relating to the underlying trends and systems changes applicable to automated underwriting. Translates strategic plans into organizational direction. Creates business plans, goals, budget and timelines to meet company standards. Participates in planning across Commercial Underwriting and influences regional and staff decisions relating to opportunities for business improvement based on trend analysis and systems changes applicable to automated underwriting. Directs associates and provides performance management, salary planning and administration, organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions. Consults with all levels of internal and external partners about policy and practice. Provides input into strategic and business plans and helps identify operational opportunities and efficiencies. Communicates strategic direction and operational plans to internal associates and external partners. Develops effective collaborative partnerships across all customers and related functions, including Claims, Regional and Staff Underwriting, Marketing, Nationwide Technology, etc. to understand business developments and build a support network to help resolve business needs. Develops customer service standards for department. Drives customer service performance to established standards. Determines and ensures delivery of training and development based on individual, department and organization needs (staff and region). Coaches, develops and provides feedback to associates. Directs education of internal and external partners and key organizational groups regarding underwriting practice, goals and strategies. May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President; typically, multiple manager and/or supervisor-level positions report directly to this role with more than 10 indirect reports. Typical Skills and Experiences: Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred. License/Certification/Designation: Completion of INS and/or AU or similar designations. Completion of CIC or CPCU is preferred. Experience: Minimum of ten years of commercial lines underwriting experience with an agency territory assignment, working on larger, more complex accounts and/or experience in book management of Small Commercial. Minimum of three years management experience in commercial underwriting preferred. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Expert understanding of the business and commercial lines underwriting practices, including experience on larger, more complex risks. Proficient in managing and communication of organizational change. Experience demonstrating a capability of developing a vision, including critical tactics and strategies, which will maximize the impact of Risk Quality throughout Nationwide. Excellent working knowledge of organizational appetite and pricing acumen, company products, program guides underwriting standards and philosophy, company agency interface applications and state statutes and regulations impacting underwriting assignments. Excellent collaboration and presentation skills in individual or group settings. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to stand alone, based on evidence. Credible and influential among commercial underwriting leadership based on risk quality acumen, experience, and timely observations. Proficiency in conflict resolution. Excellent verbal and written communication skills used to interact with all levels of Commercial Staff and the regions. Ability to analyze situations, make recommendations, and coordinate implementation/resolution activities. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations. Ability to lead, motivate, train, engage and counsel employees in all aspects of business activities.Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
